Know About A delivery From The Universe

This cat (we call her Mau) has been coming to our door regularly, begging for food. A few years ago, one evening, I came home to the news that there has been a new addition to our family; the kids had rescued and taken in one of Mau’s kittens. They called her Mani. They had a mutually symbiotic relationship; the kids and Mani - she was their soft toy, their throw ball, their furry companion and they were her scratching pad! Mani’s stay with us was short lived. In a few months, she died. It seems the survival rate for stray kittens is very low because of birth defects due to inbreeding. That was probably the first trauma in the kids’ lives. They got over it in some time. I endured the helpless torment of a mother who is unable to do anything to alleviate the grief of her children.

Mani ended up endearing us to Mau. Mau would visit us 2-3 times in a year for a 2-3 month stretch. We figured that she comes to us when pregnant and we would feed her regularly; not just leftovers but we would keep fresh milk, bread, rice, eggs out in her feeding bowl. After all, she was Mani’s mom. How could we not?

And then one day she bit my younger boy, right as he was pouring milk in her bowl. Not for any particular reason. I guess she was very close to delivering the kittens and was meowing out of discomfort and not hunger and when she saw that he did not "get it”, she did the only other thing she knew – she bit him. Or maybe she was just being her wild self. Who knows? Somehow we (my boy included) never felt any malice towards her for this; just a sense of –what a crazy thing you are!

However we decided to stop feeding her since. The housing society had banned it, for good reason. She had bitten a few more folks in the building, she was littering everywhere; jumping in and out of trash cans – scavenging for food and every time she gave birth to kittens it was a mess. She would still come to our door begging and we would turn her away.

This time, she has started coming again. Just yesterday, as me and the kids were stepping out, we found her outside our safety door, beseeching us with her cat eyes and meowing piteously. And she had gotten a cute, white kitten with her. We walked away from both of them with a heavy heart – a mix of guilt, fear, helplessness and pity. I quickly sent a prayer to the Universe that please arrange for some food for them. And lo! And behold! – What do I find as I open my door for the newspaper today? Right outside my door, in the lobby area, Mau has hunted down a pigeon and two little kitties are digging into it with gusto, prying apart feathers, wings and claws! Mau is standing guard, staring and meowing at me from the other side of the door; one fierce mother looking at another.

I couldn’t watch any further and shut the door in horror. As my shock subsided, the Vedic concept of 'Prasad Buddhi' came to my mind. Prasad Buddhi is an attitude of gratitude for the desirable and undesirable things one has or doesn’t have. Everything is ‘prasad’; a blessing from the Universe, one must receive it and treat it as such. I had made a request to the Universe and the Universe had fulfilled it in the most natural manner possible.

The pigeon would not be missed, Mau and the kittens had probably gotten such a feast after a long time, the newspaper wallah had given the newspaper and gone and the cleaning staff would come and clean up the feathers. If I was feeling disgust at that meal, at the thought of the hunt, the flapping of the pigeon’s feathers, the violence involved – that was my problem. The Universe had long delivered and moved on!
