This cat (we call her Mau) has been coming to our door regularly, begging for food. A few years ago, one evening, I came home to the news that there has been a new addition to our family; the kids had rescued and taken in one of Mau’s kittens. They called her Mani. They had a mutually symbiotic relationship; the kids and Mani - she was their soft toy, their throw ball, their furry companion and they were her scratching pad! Mani’s stay with us was short lived. In a few months, she died. It seems the survival rate for stray kittens is very low because of birth defects due to inbreeding. That was probably the first trauma in the kids’ lives. They got over it in some time. I endured the helpless torment of a mother who is unable to do anything to alleviate the grief of her children. Mani ended up endearing us to Mau.
